Cutting to the beat- Beyonce If i were a boy

Cutting to the beat

Cutting in the beat is very important for a music video because;
It makes the music video interesting
It gives the music video more depth
It makes the beat clearer with the video

IIII/IIII
/There's a fire starting in my heart/
Reaching a fever pitch, it's bringing me out the dark/
/Finally I can see you crystal /clear/
Go 'head and sell me out/ and I'll lay your shit bare
See how I leave with every piece of you/
Don't underestimate the things that I will do/

There's /a fire starting in my heart
 Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark/

The scars of your love/ remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
 I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
 Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it, to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

How to cut to the beat:
  1. Make a key for each of the different shots
  2. Start to cut in the lyrics by adding a ‘slash’ between the lyrics
  3. Add the key to the cuts for example a close up shot of Adele could be (CU A)

KEY:
B-Beyoncé
M-male
BT-B and M at breakfast table
BO- Beyoncé leaving the house
BC- Beyoncé in the car with another male
OTS-Over the shoulder shot
ETS-Extreme Long shot
2s-Two shot

Beyoncé; if I were a boy

Dialogue:
(MS-B) Intimacy/ (MS-M)
Honesty/ (CU-B)
Commitment/ (CU-M)
You/ (CU-B)
Me/ (MS-B)
Us

If I were a boy/ (HA-B) (MTS-BT) /even just for a day/ (LTS-BT)
I'd roll out of bed in the morning/ (MD-BT)
And throw on what I / (CU-B) wanted and go/ (MS-BT)
(CU-B) /Drink beer/ (LA-B) with the guys
And chase after / (LS-B) girls
I'd / (MTS-BC) kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
'Cause/ (MTS-BC) they stick up for me

Amplification, illustrative and disjuncture

Amplification, Illustrative and Disjuncture

Maroon 5- sugar
The Music video for ‘sugar’ by maroon 5 is partly disjuncture and partly illustrative. In the music video for sugar disjuncture is shown through the lyrics saying something slightly different from the video. In the video it shows the band singing in different weddings to the bride and groom. However the lyrics do represent what the music video is showing although metaphorically, making the music party illustrative. This is shown during the lyrics when the song mentions love and two people enjoying being together in the lyrics, this is then represented in the music video as it shows couples in love and enjoying being together. The music video is also a linear narrative and progress in chronological order as it shows the progression of the band going from wedding to wedding and eventually ending with the lead singer addressing each of the married couples.

Michael Jackson- Speed Demon

The music video for ‘Speed Demon’ is linear and is a chronological narrative. The music video is also disjuncture because it has a storyline and follows a consistent pattern throughout. The music video shows a person running always from people; this is represented throughout the lyrics. This is shown in the lyrics throughout. For example ‘Speedin on the freeway’ while this is ‘being played the music video shows a man running away from people on the freeway. The video is also disjuncture as the video includes moments that aren’t mentioned in the lyrics. This is shown through the video. The video is also disjuncture because the music video is a cartoon and sometimes shows things such as characters that aren’t mentioned in the lyrics and certain moments such as morphing characters and animals which represent the disjuncture in the music video.

Coldplay-Scientist

Scientist is a  non-linear narrative throughout the entire song. The scenes are being played in reverse making the video non-chronological although the lyrics are sung the correct way. This promo is an example of amplification this is because amplification takes key concepts from the lyrics and implements them in the music video which is shown in the scientist. The key concepts that are taken from the lyrics are sadness, depression and separation. These are shown by the sad expression and dull tone of voice of the lead singer. Throughout the music video the audience realise that it isn't the conventional 'break-up' between loved ones but in fact it is a break up due to the tragic death of his partner due to a car crash.

Music videos: Performance and Narrative

Music Videos

Comprise of two different types of images:

·         Performance clips

·         Conceptual clips-narrative and artistic

In most both are combined

Performance clips

Video that shows the vocalist and the band playing.

Performance settings

The video can take place in different setting, perhaps with more variety
The singer could be in their bedroom singing out the window; they could be walking down the street (common in rap music)

Narrative

Contains a visual story that is easy to follow. A pure narrative clip contains no lipsychronised singing
The story is an idea, a ‘concept’ hence conceptual
The narrative usually relates to the clip

Artistic clip

Music use artistic elements
Artistic performance video
What can you say about how the songs meaning and lyrics have been explored

 Artistic narrative

 Using narrative effectively

A narrative based video can be more meaningful than a performance-based video. It can also be easier to film

Technical requirements for performance

·         Tracking shots are hard to achieve without a dolly

·         Singer must be miming in perfect sync with the music

·         You need a large number of shots and edits

·         Shots need to be varied, constantly moving with multiple takes

·         Edits need to follow tempo

Intertextuality

18th June 2015

Intertextuality

A text that references other films or events that happened at the time. For example:

Simpsons- Hannibal-Mr Burns

Simpsons- the Beatles- Abbey road

Shrek- Disney princesses/ Charlie’s Angles

Media texts 9 films, TV adverts etc.) Are like a mosaic of references to other texts.

·         They can be used for humorous or serious effect- parody/pastiche or homage (copying)

·         Privileges part of the audience- they’re  ‘in on the joke’- but the text can still be understood by others unaware of intersexual references

·         Nostalgia- reminds audience of the past.

·         Intertextuality credits its audience with the necessary experience to make sense of such references and offers the pleasure of recognition.

·         Intertextuality is also reflected in the fluidity of genre boundaries and in the blurring of genres.

Examples of intertextuality in music videos

·         Red hot chilli peppers ‘californacation’ - video game footage

·         Robbie Williams ‘let me entertain you’- Kiss image

·         Eminem ‘without me’ – References super hero’s

The rise of MTV in 1981, potential of medium quickly realised by artists- result= big budget promos

Early audience demographics white male’s artist and rock artists
