This is a mid shot of one of the band members in the song ‘Californication’
by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The screen shot shows the band member topless on
a fake background. This is a familiar appearance in the Funk Rock genre. This
is because one of the conventions of the Funk Rock genre is the artists are
usually eccentric in the way they dress which is regularly practiced the Red Hot
Chilli Peppers. The rock genre is shown
in the stereotypical tattoos the man has and the use of a guitar, the sombre
background also shows the rock genre, this is because the rock genre is
infamous for using darker colours and dim lighting. As this is a Funk Rock band
the use of tattoos and guitar represents the rock genre however this is
eccentric which represents the Funk genre.
This is a long shot of the entire band performing. The music
video includes both performance and narrative. This is the performance part of
the song which shows the audience the band performing the song, their all
topless showing their tattoos and instruments. This is typical of a funk rock
music video because the band needs to be seen performing the song, which shows
the rock element of the song. The eccentric look shows their funk rock genre. They
are performing of a fake set which also links to the narrative of the song. the use of the fake background shows they are in a fake world which links with the narrative in the music video which is also a fake world.
The screen
shots show the narrative part of the music video which is a video game. The use
of the video game in the music video may represent what the band feel like
their world is like. The Music video
keeps a consistent theme throughout and is laid out like a game with levels of
progression. This is also an intertextual reference to the kind of games that
were around and being played at the time. The layout and graphics were that of
the time the game was released in 2000. By the band doing this they establish a
common link between themselves and the audience because they understand the
reference. This would make the audience appreciate the music video more.
